Firefighters Train on Extrication Equipment

Strongsville firefighters sharpened their extrication tool skills the week of May 14, 2018 by simulating the rescue of people trapped in vehicles.

The training took place behind Fire Station No. 4 on Prospect Road, using donated vehicles, including a school bus.

In one scene, a small car rammed an SUV from behind, sliding underneath and lifting the back of the larger vehicle off the ground. Firemedics had to first stabilize the SUV so it didn't slide off the car while they cut their way in to rescue a passenger.

The tools are used to cut, pry and spread metal, including removing doors by cutting the hinges. Strongsville firemedics now use battery-operated extrication tools rather than hydraulic tools.
