Mark Biley is Firefighter of the Year

Lt. Mark Biley was named Strongsville Firefighter of the Year. The award was presented by the St. Francis Assisi Council of the Knights of Columbus at a ceremony on Oct. 20, 2025.

His nomination letter says: Lt. Biley leads at the busiest station in Strongsville—Station 2—where his crew holds him in the highest regard as a mentor, leader, and friend. Common themes from his team’s feedback include his unmatched work ethic, calm leadership under pressure, deep compassion for others, and infectious sense of humor.

He consistently leads by example—first to start work and last to finish. During hydrant season, he insists on turning both the first and last hydrant each shift. His compassion shines in his patient care, always going the extra mile for citizens. One memorable example of his steady leadership came during the Polo Club fire, where his calm presence helped ensure a safe evacuation under intense conditions.

Mark keeps morale high with his wit and positive attitude. Despite his seniority, he chooses to remain at the busiest station and always puts the needs of the shift above his own. At 62, he remains in top physical condition, recently completing the firefighter combat challenge in under four minutes—just to challenge himself, not because it was required.

Beyond his daily duties, he handles department-wide responsibilities like hose acquisition and has served over a decade on the HazMat team. Even after 30 years on the job, he still tests for promotions—demonstrating a rare, ongoing drive.

Outside of work, Mark is a devoted family man and a volunteer at the Strongsville Food Bank, showing the same selflessness in his personal life as he does on the job. His crew says working under Lt. Biley feels more like being part of a second family. One firefighter wrote, “Working with Mark has changed my entire outlook on the job—and may have saved my career.”

Lt. Biley exemplifies humility, service, and dedication.
