Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for my project?
Many construction projects require a permit, including additions, decks, fences, sheds, roof, windows-doors, pools, electrical work, plumbing, HVAC, garages and signs. If you are unsure whether your project requires a permit, please contact the Building Department before beginning work.
How long does it take to obtain a permit?
Permit review times vary depending on the scope and complexity of the project. The Building Department strives to review and process all applications as efficiently as possible. Submitting your application through the online IWorq portal, along with all required documents, can help expedite the review process.
Why is a building permit required?
Building permits help ensure that construction work is performed safely and in compliance with the Ohio Building Code, Residential Code of Ohio and applicable to City ordinances. Permits protect property owners by verifying work meets established safety standards and is properly inspected.
What is needed for a Commercial Permit Application?
All drawings, documents and specifications submitted for official filing with the Building Department shall apply the embossing or wet seal impression over an ink signature to the title or first sheet of bound sets of drawings. All loose sheets and documents must also bear the embossing or wet seal impression over an ink signature.
Applying in person – Four sets of drawings are required as well as one electronic set
Four sets of the civil engineered stamped drawings are required to be dropped off to the Engineering Department office
Applying online – if you apply online and upload the plans, printed plans are not required
Four copies of the civil engineered stamped drawings are required to be dropped off to the Engineering Department office
What it my contractor is not registered with the City?
All contractors performing work within the City of Strongsville must be registered with Building Department before a permit can be issued. If your contractor is not currently registered, they must complete the contractor registration process prior to permit approval.
Can I obtain a homeowner’s permit?
Yes. Homeowners may obtain a permit only for work they will personally perform on their own residence. If any portion of the work will be completed by a contractor, the contractor must be properly registered with the City.
Why are inspections required?
Inspections help ensure that work is completed safety and in accordance with approved plans and applicable building codes. Required inspections are conducted at various stages of construction to verify compliance before the project proceeds to the next phase or is completed. Scheduling an inspection does not guarantee a 24 hour response.
To schedule an inspection, you must have the address or permit number for the location you are working. Commercial inspection requires permit number to schedule inspection. All inspections must be called into the Building Department 440-580-3105 from 8 am to 5 pm and require at least a 24-hour notice. Do not leave requests for inspection on the Building Department voicemail.
Can I apply for a permit online?
Yes. The City of Strongsville encourages applicants to use the online iWorq portal to submit permit applications, upload plans and supporting documents and track the status of their application. Online submissions provide the fastest and most convenient method for processing permits.
Does the city conduct property maintenance inspections?
Yes. The City of Strongsville Building Department conducts property maintenance inspections during the warmer months of the year. You may see an inspector on your street ONLY between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. WEEKDAYS.
If you have concerns, always ask for our inspector’s identification, which will be an official City of Strongsville issued photo ID card. If the person does not have this ID card, please contact us immediately at 440-580-3105 or call the police non-emergency number, 440-238-7373.
